Welcome to the 2017
Wykeham Journal
I hope that you will enjoy this
window on life at Winchester.
We have received such positive
feedback from the last couple
of issues that, rather contrary
to accepted practice, we have
increased the numbers we print.
We now know that the WJ
is widely read, then left on
coffee tables and in bookshelves
for others to peruse, rather
than remaining unread after
a mere click of the mouse
and a quick glance.
I am delighted that Charlie Peters (B, 2009-14)
has agreed to step up as our youngest yet Guest
Editor. He has approached the task with the
enthusiasm of someone who has recent memories
of Winchester, and his writing style bears the
hallmark of a Wykehamist education: grammatical,
eloquent, and meticulously researched.
This edition has the essential reports on finances
and school affairs, whilst the five stories reflect the
life and soul of the school. The loyalty of long-
serving staff to the school is extraordinary, and Viv
and Colin Nutbeam’s story is one such: we owe a
huge debt of gratitude to them both. Also included
in this edition is a story about a young Wykehamist’s
commitment to education through community
service; and a story of a recent leaver, playing at the
top of his game, demonstrates that sport is a key part
of the education and a balanced life that Winchester
provides. A growing commitment to philanthropy
amongst the Wykehamical community has enabled
us to provide bursaries to an increasing number
of gifted young men, and you can read about the
transformational experience enjoyed by one of them,
thanks to a generous donor. Finally, the story about
the Oxford Thinking campaign, led by an OW,
is an example of nurturing divergent thinkers and
giving back for the benefit of others less fortunate.
As hitherto, we welcome all our readers’ comments.
