95% of the world’s water is salt water in the oceans. The other 5% is fresh
water - most of which is locked up in ice or underground. The human population of
the planet relies on 0.03% of the world’s fresh water to survive.
That the same water has been circulating since life on earth began, passing
through all the world’s rivers, cultures, people and animals, inspired much
of the Festival’s theatrical themes. The Water Ones have arrived, to help us
listen, to get us to play and to respect that glorious 0.03%.
The Water Ones are a motley collection of
diviners, magicians, musicians, jesters,
clowns, healers, borrowers, river people and
well diggers, wanting to share their
knowledge and pool resources. They are
gathered from the flowing myriad of
professions and vocations that accompany
the rivers of the world.
The Water Ones will show us the
vital signs of life through washing,
bathing, cleaning, cooking,
cultivating, splashing and dripping
their way across the fields and hills
of the valley in a madcap chase to
return the waters to the river and
join us all together in a global
artery of fresh water.
The Water Ones are on an everlasting
journey swept along by the currents of
history and by universal river stories
in the voice of
g
of humanity
