All about the Football
The football was one of the more iconic items of wwi, and it came with an even more iconic event. It all started on Christmas eve, 1914. They all sang carols from their tranches, enjoying the holidays. The next morning they all came out of the trenches and exchanged cigarettes, handshakes, pictures, and autographs, before playing an impromptu game of soccer, or as it was known basically everywhere except America, football. After the Germans won 2-1, they had a ‘live and let live’ moment to let both sides clean up their side and gather the dead. “I don’t know how long it will go on for – I believe it was supposed to stop yesterday, but we can hear no firing going on along the front today except a little distant shelling.” A soldier writes to his mother, telling all about his experience with the truce.”The temporary truce The Truce even held up when a British soldier accidentally fired into the sky, and the ceasefire only came to an end when Military leaders on both sides heard about the apparent softening‘ of attitudes, and the truce was quickly shut down. Though short, the truce helped both sides in more ways than one, and allowed soldiers to stretch their legs without the fear of getting blown up or shot at.
