Darren Brennan - Waterford Training Centre

Tell us a bit about yourself

I am originally from Wexford but moved to Waterford in 2005, I live in Woodstown with my wife and two children. I worked as an electrician with an electrical contractor for 17 years. During that time, I worked at the Waterford training centre. I became familiar and friendly with a lot of staff and always had an interest in working for the organisation. I joined WWETB in November of last year as an Electrical Instructor.

Is the job as an electrical instructor what you expected?

It’s very hard to know what a job entails until you actually start that job, however, having worked alongside the organisation for many years I had a good understanding of what the job involved before I started.

What is a typical work day like for you?

One of many things I enjoy about the work day is the fact that there is no typical day, having 14 individuals in your class with different personalities and backgrounds makes every day different. This difference in personalities and backgrounds can also create challenging situations from time to time which need to be resolved.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

I enjoy the interaction with the apprentices and sharing the knowledge and skills that I have gathered throughout my career. It’s rewarding to help the learners who are finding the course challenging and seeing those learners successfully completing the course. It is very satisfying knowing that you have contributed in helping an apprentice starting a long and hopefully a successful career.

What are you hoping to change about the role?

Waterford Training Centre has an excellent reputation when it comes to training and development, what I am hoping to do is not change the role but do my part to ensure this reputation is maintained and not compromised going forward.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Family life takes up a large proportion of my time outside work but when I have some time to myself I enjoy working on and driving my classic cars.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of WWETB for the support and guidance I have received in the first 12 months of my new role and look forward to the future and what it may bring.
