Paul Carroll - Head Office, Ardcavan, Wexford

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Paul Carroll, I am from Enniscorthy but living in Glynn for the past year. I am engaged to Rachel since last Christmas and will be getting married next September. I have a diverse working history having worked in pubs and hotels to being a Cinema Projectionist (before digital!) and working in the construction industry. I eventually decided to go back to college in W.I.T in 2008 and haven’t looked back since!

Is the Job as Senior Systems Engineer what you expected?

Yes it is, it is a very interesting role that I really have to use the grey matter to try to plan projects correctly or to resolve problems as swiftly and as comprehensively as I can.

What is a typical work day like for you?

I am not sure there such a thing as a typical day in the life of an IT person to be honest! Each day is different and you never know what is going to pop up unexpectedly to ruin whatever plans you do have. It sounds terrible but I really do enjoy the challenge and the variety. Outside of the unexpected, I check all the IT systems to ensure that networks and servers are up and running and performing normally. As I am checking through systems I identify potential issues and begin the plan to remediate before there is actual issues. Like the doctor says, “prevention is better than cure”.

What are you hoping to change about the role?

I don’t think I want to change the role at all to be honest, it’s a good role as it is. I would like to think that I can enhance the role and try to deliver a reliable and secure IT platform that will facilitate working\learning for all WWETB Staff and Students.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Being a new home owner means a lot of my time is taken up doing little jobs around the house and garden, the list seems to be always getting bigger unfortunately! Outside of that I like walking forest trails around the county, going to nice restaurants, attending comedy gig’s and enjoying a few social beverages with friends. Also, I own 2 cats (or they own me, I’m not sure) so I do spend quite a bit of time playing and just watching them get into all sorts of situations, never ending cuteness!
