A Day to Remember - Áras an Uachtaráin

Tramore student congratulated by President Michael Higgins on his work in raising awareness of literacy in Ireland

On Tuesday 12 September, Tramore Further Education and Training Student Maurice Sammon along with Emma Tobin Coles and Joann Power Adult Literacy Organisers for WWETB attended a reception in Áras an Uachtaráin to celebrate National Adult Literacy Awareness Week.

President Michael D Higgins welcomed and congratulated all the students and ETB staff for their tireless work in raising awareness of literacy in Ireland.

Each of you serves as a great inspiration to the many others whose lives have been shadowed by literacy difficulties, and I thank and commend you for your courage and the determination that has brought you to where you are today. You all have so much of which to be proud.” Said President Higgins.

Taking the First Step: After a life changing event, Maurice decided that he needed to get help with his literacy skills. “I went down to the Adult Education Centre in Tramore, I was nervous but the Coordinator, really put me at ease. Within twelve months I was reading, it’s such a gift. I remember one day at the beginning my tutor, Mags told me “Maurice there’s nothing wrong with your reading. You just need to allow yourself to read.” That day, it was like a door opened and the sun shone in.’

Well done and Thank you to Maurice for the courage in sharing his inspirational experience. His courage has already inspired other adults to take the first step to improving their literacy skills.
