OCCUPATION
1941 - 1944
The occupation of Greece was divided between Germany, Italy and Bulgaria. The country’s economy had been devastated. Furthermore, Greece was forced to grant to German Reich a “war loan” which was never paid back($13,000,000,000) By the end of the occupation it was estimated that the population of the country was 300,000 less than it should have been, because of famine or malnutrition.
Increasing attacks by partisans in the later years of the occupation resulted in a number of executions and wholesale slaughter of civilians. In total the Germans executed 21,000 Greek civilians, the Bulgarians 40,000 and the Italians 9,000
About 1770 villages, boroughs or towns were raided, 2/3 of them were completely wiped out.
