How Did We Discover Germany’s Secrets During the War?

During the war, Germany thought that their messages were completely safe. They were sure that they were incapable of being decoded through the use of their invented enigma machine. This machine would substitute letters for others, based on its settings.

The Germans were sure that their enigma machine ensured that their messages would never be decoded.

Before Britain got involved, Poland was hard at work trrying to decode the German messages before the war officially started. Thanks to some helpful Germans, they were able to build a model enigma machine. Before they could finish their work, the war had started and Poland was under attack.

While Germany was attacking Poland, Bletchley Park in England began trying to understand the German messages. Their methods were extremely effective, cracking it in 1940; it did not become useful until they had learned of Germany planning to attack Greece. Discovering that the messages were being decoded, Germany, called ULTRA. Germany had then made another one they called SHARK; its settings were multiplied by twenty-six. These code-cracking efforts really helped the Allies win against the Axis.
