We all know that the Larry H . Miller Group of Companies and the Miller family engage in an extensive amount of charity work . That includes the many LHM employees who donate to the Give Us 5 Program with a small portion of their paychecks . From big donations to scholarships to arranging the annual Week of Service , there ’ s usually some form of charity work going on within the company at any given time . And yet , for some , it can be hard to understand how all of that giving fits together and how entities like Larry H . Miller Charities , the Larry H . & Gail Miller Family Foundation , and others all relate to each other .
Understanding the scope and nature of the Group ’ s charitable efforts is much easier when each element is examined individually .
LARRY H . MILLER CHARITIES Founded in 1995 , Larry H . Miller Charities is the primary force for charitable giving within the Group . Its primary aims are toward groups that provide health and education resources for women and children . Whenever a donation is made to a charity group , it is made by LHM Charities . Employee donations make up a big part of the money used by LHM Charities through the Give Us Five program . However , funds are also raised from big events like the annual LHM Dealerships Golf Classic and an Evening with the Utah Jazz ( formerly known as Leapin ’ Leaners and Low Tops ).
LARRY H . & GAIL MILLER FAMILY FOUNDATION
Although the Miller family does contribute to funds used by LHM Charities , they also engage in their own charitable giving to a number of good causes independent of LHM Charities . The Larry H . & Gail Miller Family Foundation was created in 2007 as a way for the Miller family to continue their legacy of giving and to include future generations of the family . Unlike the directive of LHM Charities , the Family Foundation donates to religious , charitable , scientific , literary , and educational purposes .
LARRY H . MILLER EDUCATION FOUNDATION Supporting higher education was always important to Larry and Gail Miller . In 1996 , they created the Larry H . Miller Education Foundation to provide scholarships to children of their employees . Additional scholarships , like the University of Utah enrichment scholarship , would later become part of the program . Unlike many of the other charitable efforts listed here , funds for the Education Foundation come entirely from Gail Miller .
OTHER CHARITABLE EFFORTS There are other donations and smaller programs that do not fit within any of the larger entities . An example is Driven 2 Teach , which provides history teachers with a trip to see important historic sites within the United States . This and other independent efforts usually involve donations from Gail Miller or the Miller family . For example , Gail Miller
recently announced a matching donation of $ 10 million to help fund several homeless resource centers in Salt Lake City . This donation reflects something close to Gail ’ s heart and is a donation made with her own funds .
For many employees , it is hugely gratifying to be a part of so much giving and to see that by doing our jobs , we make it possible for the Group to do so much good . It might be surprising to see how much charity work is going on , but the fact that it happens shouldn ’ t be a surprise at all . The Group ’ s mission to enrich the lives of those around us has been a part of our culture since the very beginning .
GIVE US 5 Give Us 5 is a charitable giving program driven by employee participation — by your efforts . As an employee , you can elect to donate $ 5 per month to Larry H . Miller Charities , deducted directly from your paycheck , to help women and children in your community . Every dollar you donate is matched by the Miller family . You might prefer to give more , or less , or not at all , and that ’ s OK .
