One of the biggest icons of that period in Jazz history was Jerry Sloan , the Hall of Fame coach who spent 23 seasons at the helm of the Utah Jazz . Sloan died in the early hours of Friday , May 22 , 2020 , at his Salt Lake home . He was 78 .
“ Jerry Sloan will always be synonymous with the Utah Jazz ,” the team said in a statement . “ He will forever be a part of the Utah Jazz organization and we join his family , friends , and fans in mourning his loss . We are so thankful for what he accomplished here in Utah and the decades of dedication , loyalty , and tenacity he brought to our franchise .” “ Like Stockton and Malone as players , Jerry Sloan epitomized the organization ,” the Jazz said . “ He will be greatly missed .”
The arena also holds a special place in the hearts of the Miller family and employees of the LHM Group . In 1988 , when the Jazz needed a larger venue in order to stay profitable , Larry and Gail put everything on the line in order to build a state-of-the art sports and concert destination that would have a major impact on the community .
The arena was built in an incredible 15 months and included a number of unique innovations that had never been used before in an American sports facility . Over the years , the arena had several name changes , hosted concerts and events , had a $ 125 million renovation in 2017 , and maintained a reputation for being one of the best venues in the NBA by players , fans , and coaches .
1280 The Zone has been a staple of the Utah sports radio scene for years and will continue to be . The Salt Lake City Stars ( formerly the Idaho Stampede ) are an integral part of the Utah Jazz , performing well in the NBA G League .
