The history of MOTUL in Indonesia really started in the early 1990s , by general importers , but as explained by Carlo Savoca , CMO MOTUL Asia Pacific , “ It was the early 2000s when the brand started to become famous and considered as the motorcycle communities ’ favourite brand , with its 5100 oil . Customers could recognise significant product advantages versus other brands . From then on , MOTUL has been continuously growing its reputation as a premium high-quality brand in Indonesia .”
Still an award-winning force , MOTUL understands very well how important this island nation of 125 million motorcyclists is , even with its considerable logistical challenges . “ MOTUL took over the operation from its general importer in 2018 , then it established a subsidiary company PT , MOTUL Indonesia Energy , in the same year ,” said Savoca . “ With the geographical challenges , and the landscapes of market competition in different regions , MOTUL Indonesia has no less than 35 distributors to cover the sales operation nationwide . Sales growth in 2022 was 43 % vs 2021 , and 80 % growth compared to before the pandemic era in 2019 . Not only in commercial growth , our success in Indonesia was also marked by the prestigious ‘ Brand Choice Award for MCO Category ’ two years in a row , in 2021 and 2022 .”
Everyone who has ever visited Indonesia , from the mega-metropolis of Jakarta to the smaller Islands , can agree that scooters and other small powered two-wheelers abound . As Carlo explains , “ From sales data from 2016 – 2022 , automatic scooters contributed around 85 % of total sales . With this typical market structure and MOTUL ’ s aspiration to always provide the best offer to fulfil customers ’ needs , MOTUL has a complete range of products specifically for this sector . From engine oil for smaller sized 110cc scooter to 100 % synthetic engine oil for bigger scooters with engines over 250cc , products are available to fulfil our customers needs . And each product is well known regarding their superior quality , especially in term of performance and protection . In 2022 , scooter series registered 2.5 times bigger sales compared to 2019 .”
On the pure competition side of MOTUL ’ s overall operations , Carlo explains the breadth of MOTUL ’ s commitment . “ We support and supply our highquality race proven products to several competitive teams participating in WorldSBK and WorldSSP this year . The Team HRC Honda in WorldSBK , running the Honda CBR1000RR-R with riders Iker Lecuona and Xavi Vierge is one . In WorldSSP , we support the D34G Racing squad on their Ducati Panigale V2s , ridden by Oli Bayliss & Maximilian Kofler . Also in WorldSSP , the MV Agusta Reparto Corse F3800RRs of Marcel Schroetter and Bahattin Sofuoglu enjoy MOTUL support . We are extremely proud that these teams have trusted MOTUL this year . We are also the title partner of YOSHIMURA SERT MOTUL & a few other top competing teams in EWC .”
MOTUL has established long term partnerships to supply high-quality products to numerous global motorcycle manufacturers . In factory lubricant fill and service fills , the manufacturers are MV Agusta ( since 2017 ), Sherco ( since 2020 ), Peugeot Motorcycles ( since 2021 ) and now OHVALE . Service fill contracts are in place for Suzuki , Kawasaki and Honda .
MOTUL ´ s involvement in Asia is also focused on regular road users , and other race support . The company has established partnerships in key dealerships across Asia through global OEM partnerships that deliver MOTUL ’ s high-quality product to the masses via official distribution channels , such as Kawasaki & Honda – just to name a few .
