Writing on Trial Final Portfolio | Page 32

Reflection

At the beginning of the year, writing was not one of my hobbies but today, writing has become
part of my daily life. Writing everyday made me improve a lot. As the year progressed, my pieces had more developed plots and characters. At first, I wrote pieces with very simple story lines like the piece“ Minutes Turn Into Hours” and by the end of the year I had more complex plots like the piece“ The Shot” which included a more developed character and problem.
Overall this portfolio focused a lot in details. Throughout the year, I tried my best to describe with as much detail as possible anything that would make my piece more realistic. Probably the pieces that reflect this focus are“ Unsteady” and“ Turbulence”. All the pieces in this portfolio went through a lot of revision, probably what I learned the most this year. As a new writer, revision really helped to improve my writing style because I learned where to add, remove or expand a storyline.
Overall, the weakness in my writing is still the organization. I always have a hard time with the organization in my writing because I always want to say a lot, but most of what I want to say is unnecessary. For example, in the piece“ The Shot” most of my transitions were too sudden and some details were redundant. Even though this was the piece that went through the most revision there are still a lot of paragraphs that aren’ t clear because the change of idea is too sudden and that is definitely something I need to improve in my writing.
On the other hand, I do think I improve a lot. Probably what I like most about the pieces I wrote this year was that I approach different themes such as: drama, non-fiction, fairy tale and even historical fiction. That is something I am proud because I forced myself try different writing
style for the different pieces so that they all had a unique touch.
