Writing Feature Articles – Handout 1.3a
1.3a Develop an Angle
Developing an angle means writing about a topic using your own special spin or
perspective. By doing this, you will offer readers something unique or different, which will grab their
attention. Here’s an example:
Topic: Recycling
Angle 1: Recycling by people living in NYC apartments
Angle 2: People who don’t recycle because they think it is bad for the environment
Angle 3: Using recycled plastic as art
TRY IT. Instead of writing about the “same old thing,” give your topic a new angle, a surprising twist
or an unusual point of view.
Topic: __________________________________________________________________________
Possible Angles:
Angle 1:
_____________________________________________________________________________
Angle 2:

Angle 3:

develop an angle for your topic.

Ridiculous or funny angle: __________________________________________________________
Serious angle: ___________________________________________________________________
Men’s or women’s angle: __________________________________________________________
