Dr. Mukesh Mahajan and Dr. Smita Kolhe
Prem Lata undertook
“Backyard Poultry” as vocation to
earn livelihood throughout the year
Himachal Pradesh is a small hilly State with
agrarian economy. The land holdings being
small, Animal Husbandry plays a vital role in
supporting those with limited resources. Some
areas are termed as “Changar” because of being
totally rain-fed and lack of irrigation facilities.
Fodder shortage being a major constraint,
pastoral faming is practiced.
Smt. Prem Lata, a resident of village Bhaluna,
under Panchayat Sarotri, Tehsil Baroh, District
Kangra (H.P.), after sudden death of her husband
Shri. Mangat Ram, found it difficult to manage
her family needs as there was no one to support
her economically as well as morally.
With her sheer self-belief, hard work and
perseverance, initially she made her livelihood
through various activities of animal husbandry
viz. sale of milk, rearing goats and keeping few
desi birds without any preparedness for a venture.
