Backyard Poultry Supports Economy of a Widow Dr. Mukesh Mahajan and Dr. Smita Kolhe Prem Lata undertook “Backyard Poultry” as vocation to earn livelihood throughout the year Himachal Pradesh is a small hilly State with agrarian economy. The land holdings being small, Animal Husbandry plays a vital role in supporting those with limited resources. Some areas are termed as “Changar” because of being totally rain-fed and lack of irrigation facilities. Fodder shortage being a major constraint, pastoral faming is practiced. Smt. Prem Lata, a resident of village Bhaluna, under Panchayat Sarotri, Tehsil Baroh, District Kangra (H.P.), after sudden death of her husband Shri. Mangat Ram, found it difficult to manage her family needs as there was no one to support her economically as well as morally. With her sheer self-belief, hard work and perseverance, initially she made her livelihood through various activities of animal husbandry viz. sale of milk, rearing goats and keeping few desi birds without any preparedness for a venture.
