Life Stories (Cont’d)
She shows up early every single day to the office and outworks folks half her age. She regularly carries
thousands and thousands of sick hours on the books. When she was “forced” to take time off for her
breast cancer surgery, it drove her crazy to be off of work for so long.
I once asked my mom why we weren’t on the street as long as so many others. She paused and looked
at me like I should have known the answer myself. “Because I wasn’t going to let that happen.”
If you know my mom, you’d also understand it was a silly question indeed.

EDITOR’S NOTE: I have known Lawrence since we had stories in the same Chicken Soup for the Soul
Book. Because we both lived in Southern California, not too far from each other by California standards, as
newly published authors we put our heads together to come up with some ideas about marketing
ourselves and our stories or books. Since that time, both of us have grown into seasoned writers with a
large body of work, and we have stayed in touch. Lawrence has a wonderful way of “spinning a tale,” and I
am always happy to have a contribution to the magazine from him.
