BOOK BUYING HABITS ARE
CHANGING
It’s no secret that the habits of book buyers has changed radically in recent
years. Bowker Market Research released some very interesting statistics from
Books and Consumers, January-June 2012.

As with any action, there is reaction. In this case, the number of ways readers
can discover new books has changed and grown. What it comes down to these
days is a combination of word-of-mouth and discovery on mobile and social
media.
And, the necessary actions leading to that discovery remain completely on the
shoulders self-published authors. Marketing as an individual when a team of
people is needed is a tough job. To add to this, most authors don’t have lots of
money to spend on getting their books out there, so time becomes a
commodity paired with whatever they can scrape together to do some
“awareness engineering” via paid sources.

The reprinted chart below will give you some idea of the evolution, and
remember, this is not the most current data. It is four years old! The pot
continues to stir with the numbers changing even as you are reading this.
