While April 23 is the official day, many
countries or cities celebrate this holiday on
a different day of the year, and some cele-
brations even feature dressing in costumes
of characters in favorite books. Alternate
dates are chosen for a variety of reasons.
For example, this year World Book Day was
on Thursday 7 March 2019 in the UK and
Ireland. This date came about after consid-
ering the dates of religious holidays, school
terms and potential conflict with oth-
er charitable activities.

World Book Day is a registered UK char-
ity on a mission to give every child and
young person a book of their own. It’s the
biggest celebration of its kind, designated
by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of
books and reading, and marked in over 100
countries all over the world.
