How would you describe your approach as a Director? As a Director I like to read the text and try to visualise how I would do it on stage, I write these ideas down with the knowledge that after the first rehearsal with my actors these ideas might be completely discarded or just revised. I have discovered that the best and most creative way for me to work is to experiment as much as possible, to challenge every decision just to see what it looks like. I like to enable the actors to work with me, Director is not King and it would be stupid to ignore ideas and suggestions that come from the actors. Try it and see how it affects the scene, if it works keep it if not at least you’ ve tried it. We are always told to prioritise the text first and then the audience. I think it is important to stay true to the text, do not take too much from it, or over indulge your own‘ vision’ and try to mould the text around that. If you do it is apparent and doesn’ t usually work. So when creating a scene I like to think of the visual affect on the audience, are they being drawn in? Is it interesting to look at? I also think your actors need to enjoy it, as I have acted in many things myself I know it is hard to give your all to a piece if you don’ t understand the decisions being made. I think it is good to push actors out of their comfort zone but they need to know why you are doing it. If they don’ t they are liable to get antsy. I know I do.
