WRITERS ABROAD MAGAZINE: THE THIRD SPACE
You know what it’ s like when you can’ t put a book down, but you also do not want it to end. Entry Island was one of those. It is a crime novel packed with history, spanning one and a half centuries. It brings the past to the present and vice versa. And like all good mysteries, leaves you hanging to the bitter( sweet) end.
The setting is the Magdalen Islands which sit in the St Lawrence, between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. The ties to Scotland are without doubt. The characters are strong and believable. The novel pulls on all the senses and expertly describes some of the horrors that took place during the clearances of the Outer Hebrides. I suspect May is a rigorous researcher.
This author brings a beauty and an eloquence of style to a crime novel that is an eye opener to this shameful period of British history.
So yes, I connected. It makes me want to visit the Magdalen Islands very soon.
