Swiftly now, before the dawn
creeps into this final day
scribe, rescribe while he sleeps
make this plot come alive.
Those characters who have no soul
become your own, just for a while
they leap and love, they hate, they kill
while he slumbers without care.
Grey settings, damp and with no fire
you work so they abound with colour,
life and smell, or living hell
it matters not, it’s just your job
to be in someone else's head
while he luxuriates in bed
you close the file with no regret
the finished book won’t bear your name.
