WRITERS ABROAD MAGAZINE
Writers Abroad Member Spotlight
Featuring John Eliot
I came from a family of readers. Books were to be
loved. And not that it necessarily mattered the books
were of quality. My brother and sister were a few
years older than me, so I was introduced to Camus
and the War Poets at quite a young age, very early
teens.
I realised that I wanted to be a writer when I was nine.
A student teacher got my class to produce a
newspaper which was displayed along the school
corridor. I loved the attention that writing brought. I
then produced my own newspaper at home for the
family, for quite a few weeks. What a precocious child.
I always was creative from then on, art, music
(unsuccessfully), poetry, stories, plays...
I wasn't published with a contract until about five years
