WRITERS ABROAD MAGAZINE: THE THIRD SPACE
were discovered. Archaeological excavations began and in 2003, restoration was
completed. The Spanish architect, Rafael Moneo, designed a museum to front
the entrance to the ancient theatre. It was opened in 2008.
The amphitheatre and museum have become popular tourist attractions and
not to be missed. If visiting in the heat of summer, be certain to wear a hat and
protective clothing as there is no shade.
Close by, is the Casa de la Fortuna. Not one but two Roman houses are
conserved in the basements of modern buildings. Tourists walk on glass panels
and view the remains of actual Roman habitation below their feet. Beautifully-
preserved mosaics adorn the floors and frescoes decorate the walls—a step
back 2,000 years.
Information at all venues is provided in Spanish and well translated English,
making visits interesting and informative for all the family.
