therefore more reliable and, quite simply, better. It was a slightly
odd take on the situation, given we were sitting in his 90-year-old
collectible Lincoln.
Our journey along the 60-mile course from Monterray up California’s Pacific Coast included a scenic foray into Big Sur, a sublime
section of coastline that made the trip for us. There, we took a break
to park and photograph Bill’s Lincoln with Big Sur in the background, the Tour d’Elegance being about as relaxed, and relaxing,
an event as one can imagine.
On our journey back we stopped in Carmel-by-the-Sea where
all of the participants parked their cars along a stretch of road in
the center of town adjoining a park where a lunch was hosted for the
drivers. There, locals could walk among and examine the cars while
taking detailed photographs.
Participation in the Tour, it should be noted, can play a hand in
the outcome of the Concourse d’Elegance competition. Should two
cars from the same category tie in the jury’s voting for first place, the
nod goes to whichever elected to participates in this gentle ride.
