The gorgeous portrait of Clara, a model who posed for him in his Brooklyn studio, stands with a determined look on her face, arm raised as if holding up the very bridge herself. During the overwhelmingly successful debut, CANVAS experimented by hosting local showdown in the unique and lively area of Northwood Village where seven local artists were selected to paint outdoor murals on seven garage doors of an active warehouse across from ArtHouse429 Gallery. The murals were painted during a single day - Friday, November 13, 2016 - and it was a great way to highlight such a creative and artistic community as a vibrant arts destination in West Palm Beach. The winner was Amanda Valdes, whose wildly colorful cartoonish goth girl with waves of green hair won the day. Locals know her from her “Day of the Dead” mural in the Graffiti Garden at Wine Scene on Fern Street and her quirky waitress murals at Howley’s Diner. Now CANVAS which is billed as the nation’s largest outdoor museum show, returns for its second edition with a bigger, more colorful splash. The two-weeks exhibition will happen this year from November 11 to 20 and is designed to captivate the imagination and enrich public spaces through art. 74 wpb magazine The show will bring together some of the most innovative and contemporary artists from across the globe to build new temporary and permanent installations in various parks throughout Downtown West Palm Beach. The theme of this year’s show is “Connection,” and artworks will reflect what connection means to an artist and to the world that experiences their art. One of the most important events during CANVAS 2016 will be the Local Showdown again in Northwood Village, this time on taking place on November 11 from 7 to 11 p.m. The winner will also receive a coveted position in the CANVAS 2017 artist lineup. For the Local Showdown, eligible artists must reside in Palm Beach, Martin, Broward, or Miami-Dade County. They are required to submit artwork that is unique, scalable, and suitable for public viewing of all ages. This year’s applications were reviewed by a hand-picked Selection Committee comprised of business leaders and professionals from the area.
