From the Editor’s Desk
Let’s make
more art in
public places!
P
ublic art encompasses a wide variety of creative expressions in
the public realm. From historical monuments to contemporary
installations and performance events, the possibilities are endless.
The visual art created in public locations, usually executed outside
of the context of traditional art venues, continues to gain popularity
all over the world in a climax and future perspective never seen
before due to the social media cultural context in which we are living
now.
West Palm Beach is not exempt from this movement of art expression and somehow it is becoming an inevitable integral element of
our contemporary art. Buildings and vacant lots in favorite districts
of our city have undergone a massive shift in the past few years with
murals that have become famously celebrated forms of public art. A
couple of murals in Downtown West Palm Beach by Brazilian
Eduardo Kobra are well liked and sought-after backdrops for photos
and selfies.
The highest level of demonstrating that art is bigger than life is our
own CANVAS Outdoor Museum Show. More than an art fest, CANVAS
continues to be a bold vision transforming West Palm Beach into an
artwork for the public and ensuring us that art is an essential
component of creating communities.
We are not very far from consolidating an emphatic Art & Entertainment District in our city where, innovative contemporary artists
champion to make our public art a vehicle for our community to
express its identity. Achieving success with a public art program is
challenging, specially maintaining it, developing educational programs, and creating more public art resources. We consider CANVAS
multi-phase events each year will accomplish it. We only need to be
hands-on onlookers.
