White Pap er Licenses in the Cloud There is a world of difference between licensing in the cloud and licenses in the cloud. Let’s return to our end user, Wombat Inc. It is important to remember that in all this, the customer is king and their requirements are paramount. It is the job of the ISV to ensure the end user can achieve what they need with the utmost simplicity, and it is the job of Wibu-Systems to facilitate this. Use case: Let‘s play Peter is sitting at home, playing his favourite computer game, “Beam Me Up”, when his best friend Simon calls him on his mobile and asks if they could play the game together at Simon’s house. eter thinks this is a great idea. He heads over to Simon’s house, and they sit down at Simon’s computer. P Because “Beam Me Up” has been protected using CodeMeter Cloud, Peter is able to log in to his account, download his license, and continue to play the game, this time in two-player mode with Simon. Peter wins. Use Case: CAD olfgang is an architect who travels a lot for his job. Half of the time he sits in his office, working on his W desktop computer using an expensive CAD package, Cad-me-up, but the rest of the time he needs to be at his customers’ sites displaying his work on his laptop, gathering and recording new requirements, and generally ensuring that his customers get precisely what they need. The software is too expensive to purchase two licenses, but this is ok because Cad-me-up has been protected using CodeMeter Cloud. Wolfgang is able to run the license on either machine under a single user license. Use Case: Maximum Agility for Large Customers Let us now consider a new use case and run through a scenario to see what the requirements are. Wombat Inc. has many consultants working for them, and the job of these consultants is to visit their customers in their offices to help with some exceptionally complicated scenarios. George and Roger are two such consultants, both visiting their clients on the same day. On this particular day, a Thursday, George finds he needs to use a rather expensive piece of software. He has it installed, of course, since he uses it all the time, but Wombat only purchased a single license for the software in order to save money. eorge calls Roger to ensure that Roger does not need the software on that day, and Roger confirms G that he does not need it. George is able to run the software using the single license that Wombat Inc. has purchased and is therefore entitled to use. If Roger subsequently tried to use the software, he would be automatically informed that the single license was already in use. It would then be possible for Wombat Inc. to purchase a second license (that Roger would then be able to use immediately), if the business case justified it. License transfer is, of course, also possible in this scenario. Instead of purchasing a second license, Wombat Inc. administrators could simply transfer license ownership from Roger to George in the CodeMeter Cloud. This would achieve much the same outcome, with the added restriction that Roger would not be able to use the software anymore (until the license had been transferred back to him). Flexibility is key and, as always, the customer is king. All this is achievable, because the actual license itself is stored in the cloud. This provides a number of key benefits. If, for any reason, the license needs to be altered, it can be. This requires a single operation, no matter how many users are accessing it. This includes operations such as changes to license quantities, expiration dates, or feature/component unlock. If a group of people need to be denied access, again this can be done. The system is massively redundant and scalable, allowing millions of users real-time access to their licenses. 6
