just had this melody that I thought was really
special, it felt like there was something on it.
So I brought it to the session and was like,
“Hey, I have this thing”, and I was kind of just
mumbling words. When you’re a songwriter
you kind of just sing melodies sometimes and
mumble words because it’ll sometimes inspire
something. So, I’m mumbling words at the
piano, and Jesse said, “It kind of sounds like
you’re saying ‘caught up’”. So, we just kind of
started to write it. “I just want to sit at your feet”
like I’m in the presence of Jesus and kind of
bowing at Jesus’ feet. “Caught up in this holy
moment, never want to leave”, that’s where
we started. I remember sitting at the piano
singing that, I’m in this moment with Jesus,
and instantly that phrase popped in my head,
“I’m not here for blessings, you don’t owe me
anything”, and I just started breaking down
crying, I couldn’t even sing it for about an hour,
every time I would get to it.
At that same time, I felt that same thing I was
talking about, that presence in the room, and
that God is here. I got chills and thought, “Wow,
this is a moment right now”. So that gave us
exactly what we wanted the song to say, and
that’s when we had that moment of freedom.
All of those frustrations and that penance of
coming back to what really mattered. So, the
rest of the song just kind of came out in a few
hours. We got the verses and it just felt so
natural.
Everybody pitched in. Hank wrote the bridge
at the very end of the writing session. He just
kind of said, “What if this is it? Nothing else,
nothing else, nothing else will do”, and I said
“Let’s tie it into the chorus, “I just want you” into
the bridge, you know. So, it’s a beautiful thing
to co-write with people because everybody just
brings their perspective to it and it’s really fun.
There is so much you could write with other
people that you wouldn’t think of on your own.
It’s vulnerable and you have to often bring up
ideas that can feel embarrassing because you
feel like they’re not so great. But I’ve seen so
many times a kind of mediocre idea that you
don’t think is very good. And when you voice
