[Brad] I tell people all the time, my job at
Lee is creating opportunities for students.
I have a former student named Jordan
Smith. Jordan won Season 9 of NBC’s The
Voice. People ask me all the time about my
experience with Jordan, and I tell them, I
really didn’t teach Jordan all that much. He
is a one of a kind gifted singer. What I did
do for him was create literally hundreds of
performance opportunities for him. He took
full advantage of all those opportunities and
when the moment came for him to sing for
the world, he was more than ready. This is
what I think we do best at Lee.
[WM] What advice would you offer aspiring
music, vocal, and worship studies students in
their college selection process?
[Brad] First of all, pray and seek the leading
of God in your life. Then I urge you to visit
several campuses. You cannot get a real feel
for a place by visiting a website or watching
YouTube videos only. Finally, I would say
engage conversation with faculty members
from your prospective schools. Get to know
them and their philosophies. See if you have
a connection with those that will be teaching
and mentoring you. At Lee we place a high
emphasis on faculty being available to
students outside the classroom for advising
and mentoring. I suggest that you find a
school committed to these things. There is
so much to gain for young worship leaders by
being around seasoned worship veterans.
