and it was just like as low as can be. He had a thirty-two wire strainer on it, so it was just really low, really wet sounding, not a lot of definition. So it was the opposite of what I would have used in this scenario, so I used an aluminum snare, a Ludwig Acrolite, and I had that thing really tuned up, because out of all the bands on that tour, Local Sound is the most Pop mainstream sounding. I’m doing a lot of ghost notes and I need a lot of clarity with my snare. So already, by just bringing your own cymbals and snare drum you’re achieving your own unique sound, which makes everything easy. But I guess getting to the shared equipment, the kit we were using was a C&C kit and it was formerly Jake Goss’s kit, who drums for LANY (he used on their first tour). He used that kit on C&C ‘Tour Kit’ the road for a long time, so this kit had been through the wringer. I even think the heads that were on it were the heads from when he was on tour, so it had older heads, the kit was really worn in. So with that, every night were all playing and really bashing on these drums. There’s not a huge changeover time to tune, so what we agreed on is, I started the night and I would have the drums set up for me. What I did is I would crank the tom just a little bit more to let them ring out, to have a little more punch like I did with my snare. Then what I used, which I think is so helpful with people achieving their sound, is any form of drum muffling. You can use rings or drum dampeners or whatever, and that immediately changes the sound without even having to tune the drum, you just throw something on it. So, what I would do is crank them up a little bit then throw drum dots on them to warm the sound, and that’s all I did. Then our set would end and I would quickly take my gear off and Austin would come up. And our little system was, as he was tuning down the heads to where he wanted them, I was putting his cymbals on and adjusting the stands, so that way we were killing two birds with one stone, and then he did the same thing with Carlo. It was definitely a team effort. There are companies with products that can really November 2018 WorshipMusician.com 125
