“Taking it to the Streets”
Michael McDonald. I remember when we
played “Dueling Pianos”, there was a moment
that I was on stage and I remember (and this
was during the show, not dress rehearsal, this
was live, cameras were rolling), we’re singing,
we’re playing, and I remember just looking to
my left and seeing him singing the verse of
“Taking it to the Streets”. And thinking, oh my
gosh, I have the best seat in the world right now.
I’m watching Michael McDonald do Michael
McDonald right now, like this is amazing that
I’m actually front row and nobody has a better
seat on the planet than I do right now.
[WM] One of our greatest artists was Donny
Hathaway, yet most people probably have
not heard of him. Raised in the church, he
became one of the most influential songwriters
and singers of the 1970s, both in Soul and
R&B music, yet he sadly left us far too soon.
I’ve loved many of his songs and I know that
you know exactly who he was. Did his song,
“Someday We’ll All Be Free”, or any other of his
compositions, impact you?
[Clark] Absolutely, mainly the song that
comes to mind for me is “A Song for You” (a
Leon Russell composition), one of the greatest
melodic songs ever. Donny Hathaway’s voice
on that and his soul on that. I would also say
“Someday We’ll All Be Free” was definitely
a soundtrack at one point in my life. He’s to a Batman comic book, it was actually the
absolutely in the same camp as Al Green and origin of Batman. I’ve become a big comic
the rest of them for me. book fan over the past couple years, and I really
caught onto and really loved Batman more than
[WM] Tell us about your new project, “Year anything else. So Batman Year One is about
One”, for Quincy Jones Productions. when he comes back from training and he’s in
his early twenties, he’s very fit, very capable,

[Clark] Year One is my first EP, my first he’s a genius, and he has all of the capabilities
recording project, since American Idol. It really inside of him. And then he tries to help the city
represents, the title actually makes reference and he just gets really beat up. And no one is
