testimony to what God is doing. God is growing his church. He is setting it a blaze for his glory, and I love how the drums and the guitars just come in like a tidal wave on that record.
[ WM ] The wall of sound.
[ Tauren ] There you go.
[ WM ] Now you’ re going to be going back and hosting again the Dove Awards. So, they must have liked you the first time because they brought you back again. What’ s the deal?
[ Tauren ] Bruce, four times. Either no one else wants to do it, or they’ re just gluttons for punishment.( laughing) No, I’ m honored to do it. I thought last year was going to be my last year, and surprise, surprise, it’ s not. I love doing it. I love being the cheerleader for the night of pointing people to the gifts of other people. You can’ t celebrate gifts without celebrating the Giver. And it’ s ultimately a night of celebration of the Creator as we celebrate the creative, and there’ s just a joy in that. I think the reason why they like me doing it is I care about it. I care about the script. I care about the night. I care about the performance that I get and the honor of bringing it to it. So, I’ m sure other people have invested themselves in it, but I have definitely invested myself in it to make it as memorable and significant of a night as possible.
[ WM ] Way cool. Now, on the completely flip side of that, you’ ve got 11 nominations for the Grammy Awards. Tell us about your trips to the Grammys.
[ Tauren ] I’ ve been there a few times. I haven’ t been the last few times I’ ve been nominated, but yes, it’ s an amazing night. And for the most part, let me say it like this … Love does not require agreement.
So, you can love people and love a craft and love gifts and love talents and all the diverse, unique expressions of those things. And love that and not totally agree with everything that everybody does and all the decisions that everybody makes. And I think that obviously we’ re in a very polarizing time, and a lot of people like to run to their corners to yell their opinion the loudest.
I think what I want to be an echo of is God’ s heart for people and being able to be like a voice from the middle saying,“ You can maybe disagree with some stuff that doesn’ t even have anything to do with what we’ re talking about and still celebrate the goodness of God being demonstrated through all of his unique vessels and different people.” I just haven’ t gone lately because I know if Brandon Lake or Cece Winans are nominated in my category, I’ m not winning.( laughing)
[ WM ] Now that’ s funny. One of my favorite Grammy moments was back in the‘ 80s when they opened up the show with Bob Dylan and he was singing“ Gotta Serve Somebody.” The line was,“ You can serve the devil, or you can serve the Lord, but you gotta serve somebody.”
