MULTITRACKS
THE NEXT INNOVATION OF THE MULTITRACK: INTRODUCING MT COMPLETE | Jesse Schaefer, Product Marketing Manager, MultiTracks. com
For almost 20 years, MultiTracks. com’ s mission has been to empower churches with the ability to run tracks during worship services, bringing the sound of the original master recordings to worship teams around the world. But as powerful as the multitrack has been, a question lingered: While there are lots of scenarios where tracks are great, what about those where it’ s too much or not enough. What if churches could go beyond the original recording and customize their sound? What would that look like?
That question sparked a journey of innovation, creativity, and collaboration that led to the birth of MT Complete, the first-ever threedimensional, multi-genre multitrack designed to give churches the freedom to express their unique musical identity. One song, four genres; with matching arrangements and chord progressions that you can mix and match to create your own unique sound.
It all started with a voice memo from founder Phillip Edwards:
“ What if we could offer the multitrack in multiple genres? Gospel, contemporary, acoustic, or even orchestral? Then you could even mix those genres. Your church could express their own one-of-a-kind sound this way.”
The idea was bold but frankly seemed impossible. To accomplish this, our team would have to overcome musical complexity, technical limitations, and logistics of recording a vast range of instruments and styles. But Phillip believed that with the right constraints, creativity could flourish.
“ Aren’ t constraints themselves what make way for true creativity?”
With the green light to figure it out, our team sprang into action. Musicians and engineers from Nashville, Austin, Australia, and the UK were brought together to record genrespecific arrangements of worship songs. Each song was meticulously crafted in four genres: Contemporary, Gospel, Orchestral, and Acoustic.
We started to think about tracks in a new way. A multitrack has always been two dimensional. But we wanted it to become three dimensional. It’ s no longer just multiple tracks in one song, it’ s one song stacked with multitracks in multiple versions, each a completely different sound. The goal? To allow churches to mix and match parts from each genre, so they can create a custom sound that fits their individual context, or flow in and out of each version at any time. Start with an original song, break down to acoustic, build with an orchestra on the bridge and end the song with a gospel vamp as a transition. You can make each song and moment your own.
As we all aligned on the greater goal of MT Complete, recording and arranging began. Everything up until that point was half of the battle, we then needed to tackle the development side of the equation.
With up to 120 stems per song, we faced a new challenge: How does this work in Playback? No existing iOS tracks player could intuitively
