Once connected, everyone has control over their mix, can add reverb, use an integrated metronome, chat, and record the session. The Lutefish recording feature captures your session and stores them in the cloud for quick distribution.
I see Lutefish Stream as a way to maximize volunteers’ time and keep them more engaged. You’ re enabling people with conflicts and commitments to still be involved, People still get family time, but they also get to participate fully in rehearsal.
[ WM ] How big of an issue is online latency?
[ Patrick ] Latency is one of the biggest challenges of every online collaboration platform. This is where Lutefish has staked its ground. By capturing and transmitting the audio as quickly as possible and using DSP to smooth over any hiccups, our team has managed to keep one-way latency under 30 – 35 milliseconds within a regional range using fiber optic or cable internet connections. That’ s the equivalent of standing about 30 feet away from another musician on stage— close enough to feel natural. At that point, you stop thinking about the technology and just play.
[ WM ] How can Lutefish foster creativity between churches?
[ Patrick ] One of the things I’ m most excited about is the potential for cross-site collaboration. You might have two groups in the same city that never interact because of logistics. With Lutefish, they can hold a joint rehearsal, plan a performance night together, or even co-write new songs.
[ WM ] How do you get started with Lutefish and how easy is it to use?
[ Patrick ] Getting started with Lutefish is straightforward: you purchase the hardware and subscribe for access. The standard plan includes unlimited sessions, 5 GB of storage, and up to five simultaneous participants, enough for most worship bands.
On the gear side, Lutefish Stream has been designed with simplicity in mind. Plug in your guitar, pedalboard, amp modeler, keyboard, or mic into the combo XLR / TRS jacks and you’ re ready to go. For monitoring, I usually recommend headphones to minimize latency, but I have also seen creative setups with small PA’ s and hybrid ensembles. Every foot a speaker is from your ear adds about a millisecond of delay; headphones keep it tight. But if you’ re in one room with three people and looping in two more remotely, a PA still works. It’ s flexible!
[ WM ] What else would you like our readers to know about Lutefish Stream?
[ Patrick ] The heart of Lutefish is not the technology itself, it’ s what the technology enables. Collaboration doesn’ t just improve musicianship, it deepens community. Making music together is magical. Doing it in person is the best way, but when life gets in the way we want to enable people to still have that experience even if they can’ t leave home.
Ultimately, Lutefish Stream is more than another audio interface. It’ s a new way for musicians to connect, rehearse, and collaborate— whether across town or across the country. For worship teams, educators, and players who just want to jam without the hassle of travel, it could be a game-changer. Our goal is to see people connect and make music together. If Lutefish can remove barriers and create new opportunities for collaboration, then we’ ve done our job.
