SOUND CHECK
IT’ S TIME … TWO BIG THINGS TO PLAN FOR
Once the calendar clicks over to September, two things kick into gear for worship and tech teams everywhere … Every year, it doesn’ t fail. What are they?
1). It is time to take stock of what you will need to presen / pull-off / accomplish the extra services, musicals, and kids’ plays of the Christmas celebrations at your church.
Yes, those extra rehearsals, planning sessions, audio and lighting upgrades, and what piece of musical gear will make that“ difference” to heighten this year’ s holiday events? How about finally buying that NORD Stage 4 keyboard to embellish your musical pads? That keyboard is even Christmas red in color. Or perhaps that sparkle-blue Fender Telecaster with a rosewood fingerboard? That will match the decorative look of the platform. OK, I’ m just trying to work in items that I might personally want— sorry! it has been three years since you changed the bass strings! New higher-quality guitar cables are a winner, and perhaps a D. I. box to replace that funky one that at the worst times makes odd noises?
The lighting folks will have some upgrades in mind, and the audio side can always use something. Even if it is just a few new vocal mics and a battery charging station.
There are things you can do, big and small. Sit down and discuss with your team where the greatest needs are and what is possible with the resources at hand.
Speaking of resources— that leads us right into the second thing that happens during the last few months of the year …
2). Preparing your budget request / needs / musthaves for the 2026 calendar year.
It again ranges from simple needs like sound system and gear maintenance all the way to replacing your digital console and speaker arrays. Whatever amount you’ re spending, it is good to have a plan. This time of year is great to start researching your options.
That is the benefit of the internet and YouTube. You can Google any piece of gear or find brands that you have never even heard of before. Instruction videos on YouTube can educate you as well. Keep in mind that some influencers are paid and may be biased in their opinions.
Talk with others in your same situation. Scout out information that will help you make a better decision. You’ ll be a better steward of the funds and responsibility if you educate yourself well.
There you have it— here’ s to a great fall and Christmas season!
If you don’ t have a large budget, you can look at different ways to freshen up the band with new drumheads and guitar strings, and oh yeah …
Many churches like to plan and put funds aside for the upcoming year that is upon them.
