As the saying goes , “ that which is important is resourced ” and if the TD is paid below comparable positions or is required to work twice the hours of someone at the same pay scale , the result will be TD burnout . A fulltime church TD will usually spend three years at a church before leaving . The job begins with high hopes and a detailed gameplan , yet , once the honeymoon ends and the new resources fail to materialize , requirements expand , and volunteers quit due to pressure and unrealistic expectation , the TD becomes disillusioned and leaves as soon as another opportunity arises , only to find the next gig is a Groundhog Day movie experience of the same thing all over again .
To prevent this rinse-and-repeat cycle of fits and starts , the TD must internalize the reality that church work is messy , difficult , driven by frail human leaders and often has little actual “ ministry ” involved . As a corollary , senior leadership must embrace the fact the TD is probably the most vital staff member , not because the TD is great , but because the role is essential . A weekend of services can proceed without the senior pastor , worship pastor and executive pastor in place , but will fall flat if the TD isn ’ t there . Churches have built buildings and planned services around technology working correctly at all times and that dependency has created a scenario where the tech is more important to the proceedings than any other function or position .
In summary , church tech is a difficult job . The TD must encompass a servant heart at all times , in spite of the baked-in unfairness of the role . It is vital the TD approach each week with a fresh heart and humble spirit . To that end , personal devotion time , discipleship classes , deep study of the Word and accountability are the only way to achieve long-term success as a church TD . Any dependency on self will fail .
Techs are drawn to the TD role for the excitement of the technology , ability to make a difference and fulfillment of purpose , but must balance these attributes with the more important spiritual aspects of tech , since without that , it ’ s just gear .
