KIDS WORSHIP A LEGAL CHECK-UP FOR KIDS WORSHIP | Yancy Here we are… living in the middle of what has become a new season of how to do Church in 2020. Some of you are gathering together in person, albeit with various restrictions of size, space and cleaning procedures. Some of you are meeting outside. Others are still restricted to online services only while others are doing a combination of all the above. Whatever boat you’re in, it’s time to shine the spotlight on a few things you need to be aware of moving forward. These things apply for kids worship as well as adults. Do a check-up on your church and make sure you are doing worship legally moving forward. 1. ONLINE STREAMING. Whether you’re streaming your service live only or making it available for families to watch on demand you need to make sure you’re covered. A CCLI streaming license is a great place to start. Think of CCLI as covering you for the song itself (songwriter) but not the recording (Artist/record label/organization who owns the master). If you’re performing your music completely live then this will cover you. However if you’re using stems/backing tracks, using pre-recorded music and even showing videos within your service that you did not create completely yourself you need to make sure you have the necessary permissions and licenses to use them in your livestream or on demand viewing. Early in the pandemic there was a huge shift in the Kidmin world to move kids church online. Many organizations granted free permissions for a season as we all shifted and adjusted. If anything this season has taught us is it’s not as much a “that vs. this” either/or scenario as an “and” combination of both in person gatherings and online offerings. My ministry launched a new “Annual Streaming Master Use License” to allow Churches to use the music, video and curriculum we create outside of your four walls in an online method for your online services. Some other ministries that have followed are: Doorpost Songs, JumpStart3 and Orange. Reach out to the creator of your content and ask what their guidelines and requirements are. It’s probably an easy solution for you but it’s important to do things the right way so that those that worked hard to create the content that blesses your Church family are compensated for your usage. This is how they are able to continue creating for the future. WorshipHouseKids.com has a web-license available for you to use the video you purchase in an online setting. Some of these are at a gratis level. Others have a small fee but these options help contribute towards all the extra access points you’re making available of the video that the Producer made. 2. YOUTUBE It is great place for research of content but did you know when you read the fine print of the “terms of use” that it is for personal use only? We all scroll, check the box and hit “I agree” on sites but often times in the process we overlook some important information that would affect our actions. You can’t use YouTube at your Church. If that’s your database of worship resources just know that is a copyright infringement. Even worse, ripping the video off of YouTube is breaking a Ten Commandment. (Mic drop). Let’s choose integrity in all our actions. What you can use YouTube for is linking families to a resource. Remember it’s for personal use. So for instance in your email to parents you can send them links to a few songs or a Bible story that goes with your lesson. On your Facebook page you can share a link to a video that would benefit your families and help them grow their faith. 3. OPEN RESOURCES If your budget is limited or maybe even nonexisting know there are resources you can access for free from some awesome churches out there. These churches are able to share and give the things they create for their church with other churches and it’s a huge blessing to many. A few of the options include: • https://open.life.church • https://seeds.churchonthemove.com/ resources/kids • https://newspringnetwork.com/ resources/kids However you’re leading kids in worship in this season I pray you will be filled with wisdom in each step. As you move forward in the days to come I pray you will be aware of what God wants to do in and through you. May you lead from a place of overflow fully aware that God is faithful and good in every season. Help kids draw close to God and seek Him first in all things. ©2020 Yancy Ministries, Inc.
