and Herdim heavy nylon picks (AKA The Edge pick). I typically use the Dunlop, but some of the songs, like “Returning”, I really wanted the lead part on the chorus to have a lot of definition and attack, and the Herdim did the trick. I don’t use Herdim picks very often, because it’s a very specific sound and sometimes I think it’s a little too noticeable, but every now and then it’s perfect. I think a lot of times guitar players don’t think of picks as a big part of their tone, but it is a huge piece of that puzzle. I recommend experimenting with different picks so you can see how it affects your sound. “Simple Days” was one of the main songs I played slide. This song has a really great, open vibe to it and is such a beautiful song. I was trying to create some big soundscape style pads, so I used a Rockslide glass slide, which is my favorite to use. For a song like this, I wanted a big sound that had a little bit of dirt, but wasn’t distorted. To achieve that I used Bonsai (TS-9 setting) with the overdrive all the way down and a MXR Dyna Comp together. That helps with sustain and gives just the right amount of grit to the tone. Then, you know, I just used a ton of reverb and delay. All in all, this is one of my favorite albums I’ve ever been a part of, and I am really proud of the guitar parts on it. Playing music with people you love is a gift, and this album is a perfect example of that. Go play guitar. James Duke James is a musician, songwriter, and producer from Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
