PLAYING TOGETHER, MILES APART // WHY LUTEFISH STREAM IS A GAME-CHANGER FOR MUSICIANS | Chris Rocha
Practicing for concerts, church services or special events has always been in person until now. Lutefish has made it possible to link with your band and play music remotely. What a game changer! For most of us, our teams are spread across cities, have jobs and Sunday morning soundchecks are often the only time we actually play together.
That’ s why I’ ve been so excited about Lutefish Stream.
If you caught any of my recent livestreams with Lutefish, you saw it in action. No web-call delay, no“ you go, no- you go” over a glitchy laptop mic. I was in one city, a drummer 100 miles away, a keys player in another state— and we were actually jamming. In time. In tune. With studio-quality sound. And anyone could watch live with one link, no login needed. I played at a worship conference event a while back with Lutefish and had my band spread across Miami. We played seamlessly for 3 days. We invited musicians who walked by to play with us, and it was a super cool experience.
Here’ s what makes it so cool:
1. IT’ S NOT SOFTWARE. IT IS A REAL MUSICIAN’ S DEVICE.
Lutefish Stream looks like a small, road-ready interface, but it’ s fundamentally different. It doesn’ t plug into your computer via USB and fight with your DAW drivers and Wi-Fi. It plugs straight into your router via ethernet cable.
That one design choice is everything. By bypassing Wi-Fi, background computer processes, OS overhead, and audio driver latency, it gets round-trip latency down to 20- 35ms for players up to 500 miles apart. That’ s about the same as standing 30 feet apart on a big stage. It feels natural.
On the hardware itself: Two combo XLR / 1 / 4” inputs with legit Class-A preamps, individual gain controls, two headphone outs( both 1 / 8” and 1 / 4” so you never hunt for an adapter), a master volume, and a built-in talkback mic. Power is USB-C.
