a deep dive into what God was doing in our church’ s youth ministry. I had endless amounts of support and excitement from my family, friends, and my church. I was leading kids into eternity, reminded that I was their age when I first accepted Jesus. I knew I was right where God wanted me. Over 60 kids in our youth group actually got to do gang vocals on“ Why Should I Worry.”
The very night the song was originally released, I opened for my Dad’ s band, Hopeful, in Sacramento, California, and two A & R reps from Curb Records were at the show. I was offered a deal shortly after and signed with Curb Records a couple of months later. Throughout all of this, it felt like the Lord was saying“ See? Why should you worry? I’ m taking care of your future.” It all felt like a full circle, God moment.
I recently released“ Why Should I Worry( Remind Me Version)” with Curb Records. This is a new take on the song that started my journey with the label, and I wanted it to serve as a reminder of God’ s faithfulness as I embark in this new season of releasing music. The song is being played all over the world, and it’ s amazing to hear testimonies of how the Lord is using it to encourage people through very hard seasons of worry, fear and anxiety.
[ WM ] During the filming of the video something unusual happened when the stand up piano on the beach met the Pacific Ocean. What went on?
[ Carly ]( laughing) Unfortunately I am sad to report that piano did not live to tell the story. During the filming of the video, the piano fell on its side when pushed by the crashing waves. We thought it was a beautiful shot, and we let it sit as the waves crashed into it as we filmed. The piano got completely sand logged! It was super heavy and hard to move. Some locals did not appreciate the art on display and called the Park Rangers on us, and the piano had its final resting place at the local waste management facility. Even still, it was so awesome recording a music video with a piano in the ocean. This is something I will never forget! But I will say, I am so glad to have a team now to help with these things. The video would not be so logistically hard to execute now, as it was then without a team! It was very hard being an independent artist.
[ WM ] We find your singing voice to be quite soulful and powerful at the same time. How did you cultivate it and how do you maintain it?
[ Carly ] Thank you so much! I think the soul and power really comes from the pain and trauma I’ ve faced as a child paired with the freedom and redemption I have found in Jesus. My life has seriously been dramatically changed, and I truly have something to sing about. I am a firm believer in singing the truth with passion and heart, being as vulnerable and authentic as possible. This can be a little scary at times. Now with the hope I have in Jesus, I can sing from a place of healing, restoration, and so much joy!
From a technical standpoint, I was raised listening to incredibly soulful vocalists, so I naturally gravitate towards that. I have been singing my entire life, so as I found my calling in worship, my( new) parents really pushed me to seek formal training. They have always been incredibly supportive of my dreams and the calling on my life, and they wanted me to seek an education in order to have longevity in my career. This is how I ended up pursuing an AA in Vocal Performance and finishing it off with a degree in Commercial Music Production.
To take care of my voice, I try my best to take vocal breaks, steam and hydrate a lot. I have regular checkups a couple of times a year with my ENT to make sure my vocal cords are healthy. I work with a Speech Pathologist and Vocal Coach to ensure I have good technique, and everything’ s functioning well. But I must confess, I still struggle with doing vocal warmups consistently!
[ WM ] Last question. What hopes do you have for this first artist record of yours?
[ Carly ] I hope I can bring a new perspective into worship through my album. Sonically, I believe I’ m entering into something that hasn’ t been done in the Christian industry before. I’ m carving a new path and I’ m so excited. I really hope people experience the Lord in a new way or maybe even for the first time through my music. I want people to walk away inspired to live a life for Christ, knowing redemption, freedom, forgiveness and restoration is available to all through the love of a Savior who died for them.
[ WM ] Thank you for taking the time here with us Carly! We look forward to seeing you at the Christian Musician Summit next month. [ Carly ] Thank you so much for having me. It has been an honor!
