CAPO GUITAR
ELEVATION WORSHIP , “ GREAT IS ” | Mitch Bohannon
“ When I look back over my life and I think how good You have been , my soul sings , ‘ Great is , great is Your faithfulness .’” That lyric just got stuck in my mind a few weeks ago . I was watching the livestream of First Baptist Church , Tifton , Georgia because my friend , Joe Thompson was playing guitar . I had not yet finished listening to the new Elevation Worship record that dropped last month , so this was the first time I had heard “ Great Is ” from Elevation and I immediately started searching lyrics to figure out where the song came from .
The lyrics sing of going through difficult times yet realizing that God is constantly working whether we see Him or not . It ’ s a faithboosting song that really anyone can fit their story into , so it can become deeply personal . The melody is one that has stayed with me , and I felt like it would be a perfect song for Celebrate Recovery .
I introduced it to the guys I lead worship for CR with last night and it easily came together in just a couple of run-throughs ( check out the video ). This is a fantastic song to play with the Short- Cut Capo . Just seven chord shapes that play in a logical progression , so it ’ s easy to memorize as well . ( Did you read my August article about confidence monitors ? Please memorize your music !)
With a tempo of 90bpm and my click running at 180 , it ’ s got the energy you ’ d want at the start or to build up a worship service . The rhythm rolls nice and easy through the verses into a triplet of punches that accent the lyric at the chorus . A good way to think of it is that your pick is singing the song just as much as your voice is . Try not to just lock into a strumming pattern and then sing a whole song over it . Sing with dynamics and play with dynamics . on fret 1 and the Short-Cut Capo on fret 3 and you can play with the recording . If you find it too high to sing , drop the extra capo , place your Short-Cut on fret 2 and sing in “ E .” If you find it too low , move both capos up the neck until it ’ s comfortable for you to sing .
The bridge is a straight 8 th note drive with just two chords in it until the turn around . It has its own dynamic power and musically , it builds tension that releases when it turns back into the chorus . I chose to sing through the bridge three times starting with a down-bridge . The electric

guitar played diamonds the first time through and then switched to an 8 th -note arpeggio , the drums and bass were just on a quarter-note punch and then built up the second and third time through . This song is sure fun to play !
“ Great Is ” is effective whether you have a full band or you ’ re leading alone on your acoustic . If you do have a band , work on your arrangement to fit the strengths of your team and create dynamic moments that fit the song . But to start , go grab your acoustic and a Short- Cut Capo and worship !
