THE 9 NECESSARY STEPS I TAKE TO PRODUCE MY GUITAR TRACKS IN THE RECORDING STUDIO | Chris Rocha
Recording music in the studio is an art form that requires careful planning and execution . For a guitar player , capturing the essence of a song can be a rewarding experience . In this article , we will explore the nine necessary steps that I follow when recording in the studio , from writing the number chart to recording a guitar solo .
STEP 1 : WRITE THE NUMBER CHART The foundation of any recording session is a well-structured number chart . I need to ensure that I have a clear roadmap for the song , indicating chord progressions , sections , and any other musical details necessary for a smooth recording process .
STEP 2 : RECORD BIG RHYTHM MOMENTS To establish a solid foundation , record overdrive guitars . These parts are typically played on the left track first and then duplicated on the right side . By prioritizing rhythm elements , the player lays the groundwork for the song ’ s dynamic energy . I love utilizing and maximizing the stereo image . STEP 3 : CAPTURE CLEAN AND AMBIENT GUITAR TONES Moving beyond the power chords , the guitar player records cleaner and ambient guitar tones ( for the verses in most cases ). These softer tones provide a contrasting texture to the heavier sections of the song . Additionally , if the verse feels lacking in depth , the player may add more guitar parts after the first chorus to enhance its musicality . Picture a song like a journey . As it moves further along integrate new elements and textures . We need to take people on a musical journey . Just make sure not to overdo it and saturate the song too much .
Keep in mind that there are other very important instruments adding their parts as well .
STEP 4 : ADD A HIGH MELODY TO THE CHORUSES To elevate the choruses , introduce a high melody that complements the vocal melody . Care is taken to ensure that the guitar part does not overshadow the vocals but rather enhances the overall impact of the chorus . Sometimes , an aggressive guitar tone is employed to create a powerful and memorable counter hook to the lead vocal .
STEP 5 : ENHANCE THE BRIDGE DYNAMICS The bridge of a song often presents an opportunity to introduce dynamics and build tension . Carefully listen to the bridge and adds rhythmic guitar parts and ambient counter melodies to enhance its emotional impact . If the song includes hits , the guitar is used to reinforce these moments . Keep in mind that
