PAT BARRETT “ Better Hands ” - Song Spotlight to just “ let go , let God ”. This first verse deals with all of that in four simple phrases and is an idea that we all can connect with .
MAVERICK CITY MUSIC The Maverick Way EP With such well known songs as “ Good Good Father ”, “ God Is So Good ( You Are Worthy )” and the recently certified Gold , “ Build My Life ”, Pat Barrett has established himself as one of the better song writers of the past few years . Barrett has a wonderful knack for making complex Biblical ideas simple to the regular pew-sitter through his rootsy , down to earth writing and singable melodies .
In preparation for his latest album release , Shelter , which dropped on October 13th of this year , Barrett , like so many others , has released a few teaser tracks , the best of which being “ Better Hands ” which caught my attention right away .
The song begins like many of Barrett ’ s tunes with a rhythmic acoustic guitar , upright piano and mid-tempo drum beats as we hear about a man ’ s spiritual growth happening right in front of us . Barrett sings about the desire to better lean on the promises of God and to truly let things go because when he does so , things always turn out better than he could have imagined . The melody is simple , but the lyrical idea here is not .
There is an old cliché that we have all heard and maybe even said ourselves , “ Let go , let God ” but how hard is it really to truly give something we are dealing with to a deity we cannot see and then leave it at His feet ? I think anyone who has dealt with a tough time in life whether it is losing a loved one , overcoming addiction , or a broken relationship knows how tough it can be
The chorus follows and is centered on one phrase ; “ This is better hands , this is a better plan . This is in better hands than my own ”. Again , simple , yet complex ideas written in a way that all listening and worshiping can be a part of . Here , Barrett extols the faithfulness of God and remind us that His plans are always good , even if things don ’ t necessarily turn out the way we think they should . It is also a declaration of the divinity of God and our place in His kingdom .
Verse 2 is in a similar lyrical vein as the first but here Barrett proclaims that he wants his foundation built on the promises of God and that the name of Jesus is greater than any name because of what He has and continues to do for us .
After a bump in musical energy for chorus 2 , the bridge reminds us that no one has ever loved us like our God throughout history and therefore we should not fear when we don ’ t understand why God is allowing something to occur in our lives because He is always for us . The energy of the moment and melody hooks here are inviting and you just can ’ t help but sing along and rejoice at who our God is .
A gospel choir joins the final chorus ’ which seems absolutely perfect , and the song ends with a quiet outro in what has become one of my favorite songs of the year . Even though there is nothing earth shattering in the way of musical ingenuity here , the idea of truly letting go and trusting that our problems and concerns are better in the hands of Jesus is a beautiful yet challenging idea . This track really got me thinking about the strength of my own faith . We will definitely be adding this to our regular Sunday morning fare .

The new EP is very eclectic in nature with forays into the modern pop worship vibe expertly blended with southern Gospel , rap , house and even a little reggae for good measure . God ’ s incredible faithfulness and His power and might are themes that serve as the center point for this EP from Maverick City .
With borrowed scripture from Zechariah 4 , “ God Problems ” is led by Chandler Moore and Naomi Rain . This amazing track is a downto-earth declaration of all the ways that God overcomes the seemingly impossible problems in our lives . The mixture of the two powerful vocals is an incredible testimony of hope that
