communicate the heart of the “ why ”.
[ WM ] Love it . This is a good segue to my next question . If you were in a room with our readers … worship leaders , worship musicians and tech teams . And it ’ s your home church , what would your prayer be for our people ? What would you s to encourage them ?
[ Brooke ] Yes , I think I would definitely pray that we were all reminded , that we were all equal ministers of the gospel . And that whatever we are doing , whether we are manning the lighting desk or doing monitors or playing guitar or leading a song with a microphone … that we are all ministers of the gospel and that it matters how we minister .
And the posture of our hearts matters in those moments . And so hopefully that ’ s an encouragement to people . Man looks at appearance , but the Lord looks at the heart . So it ’ s always important that we are continuing to grow in the skill and the gift that God has given us , but it brings him glory when we steward what he ’ s given us well .
But also , that worship is at its core … it has always been sacrifice and surrender . That is a posture and a position and offering of the heart .
[ WM ] Wow . That ’ s amazing . Good answer .
Okay . Last question for you Brooke . The new record 8 opens with the song “ Bless God ”. It starts out a simple , beautiful praise chorus and then keeps building and building and ends with this wonderful spirit-filled choir . It must ’ ve been fun to record that song , walk us through “ Bless God ”.
[ Brooke ] Yes . That is a song that I just feel so thrilled that we got to record , because we wrote that for Cody Carnes ’ record . Cody put his version of it out in July . So that ’ s on Cody ’ s new record Firm Foundation .
But honestly , that song has been such a gift for me personally , because we wrote that February of last year , and from the day I got to take away from it just the little demo with Cody ’ s voice on the piano singing that song . And last year became one of the most difficult years of our lives . And so that demo song that I had of Cody ’ s voice on the piano , and those words became the thing that I would put on in my car . And after I dropped the kids off at school , I would put it on and just drive around the street ( sometimes way too long ), just weeping before the Lord and confessing those lyrics that every chance I get … that I will bless him in all these places … “ in the sanctuary and the field of plenty , but in the darkest valley , when my hands are empty with the praise that cost me when nobody ’ s watching ”.
So that became such a lifeline for me , that prayer in the past year . And then Cody was so gracious and generous to let me do a version of it , and I just had such a blast with it . And
