On the first track you will find the Talk Box . Obviously on later albums the Talk Box is present , but always as a synthesizer , never as an effect on the guitar until our revamp of “ Thief in the Night ”, on our Day of the Lord album . I use it on guitar in concert because I don ’ t want to have to set up another synthesizer on stage . Now it ’ s become a crucial part of our live sound that I ’ m sure will bleed into future albums as well .
[ WM ] Lastly , many of our readers of [ WM ] play guitar on their worship teams and also outside of their worship teams , in cover bands , coffee shops or elsewhere . What words of advice do you have for them ?
[ Renato ] Understand that there is something much bigger than your instrument . There is a syndrome that plagues guitarists . It is a disease called guitar hero , where the guitarist thinks that they should be the center . They think that all songs should have guitar solos , that the guitar should play all the time , I could go on , and on ... This message is not just for guitarists , but for musicians as a whole .
Keep in mind that you are playing something much bigger than just your instrument - it ’ s called MUSIC . Serve the music , play only what is necessary , silence is also music , that ’ s why there is the figure of pause in musical writing .
Less is more . It ’ s not about you . Music is not a competition of who plays the best , music is an art of collaboration . We all work together towards an end result that is so much greater than our individual musical parts .
You need to have that servant ’ s spirit - especially if you are a church musician . In this case not only do you serve the music , but you also worship the Lord with all of your heart and serve Him through your gifts , whether in the local church or headlining main stage at a major festival . Everything should be done for His glory .
