MULTITRACKS
WE NEED EACH OTHER | Jesse Schaefer
Marching bands . Basketball teams . Surgeons . I ’ ll say it , even theologians . These groups of people have one particular thing in common , which is that they can bring a tear to my eye when they execute their craft perfectly .
Now , I ’ m not saying that I have a penchant for medical professionals , and I don ’ t think I could name five current professional basketball players if you offered me a thousand dollars . I do have a particular interest in marching bands and theology , however . But that ’ s not why groups like these astound me . It ’ s the coming together of a group of people , all with specific specialties and skills , to achieve something greater than any one person could achieve on their own .
I ’ ll give you another mundane example . My wife and I have painted almost every room in our home . She tapes the baseboards and ceilings with painter ’ s tape , and I do the painting . This is not because I don ’ t want to do the taping . It is because I am actively bad at it . I mean bad bad . No matter how hard I try , everything I ’ ve ever taped ends up with paint bleeding through and when its peeled it off afterwards , it ’ s a mess .
My takeaway here is “ let someone else do it .” Strengthen your strengths and ask for help from experts in areas that would suffer if you tried to do it all . Marching bands would be unpalatable if they were made up of only tubas . ( No offense , tuba players ) A basketball team would lose every game if every player were a point guard . I would prefer a Neurosurgeon to operate on my brain over an Oral Surgeon . And God bless my college Old Testament professor who looked and sounded like Ben Stein , but I imagine he wouldn ’ t get his point across in a children ’ s ministry program .
Someone once told me that all in one shampoo might as well claim to do anything , because it really doesn ’ t do any of them well . No one asked for a 9 in 1 shampoo , conditioner , body wash , soap , lotion , shaving cream , toothpaste , detergent , and motor oil . You get the point here .
We need each other .
“ If you want to go fast , go alone . If you want to go far , go together .” African Proverb
I used to think of the talents and passions
that God puts in each of us as singular . As if someone was a master of a certain skill or craft , then they ’ d be able to use that to glorify God in the things they do with that skill on their own , and that was the end of the story . But that ’ s not the whole story . The beauty of our diverse talents is that we can come together to create , express , or accomplish something that transcends the efficacy of anything that we could do alone .
As Worship Leaders , we see this all the time . One team member may have a skill for public speaking , while another might be better suited to be a music director . Different song keys resonate better with different singers and each different instrumentalist plays their specific role . It all comes together to form one sonic landscape that makes a “ joyful noise ”.
At MultiTracks . com , we feel the same way . Our goal is to equip worship leaders with the resources they need to present the gospel in worship with excellence .
