Using the fingering specified in Figure 2 , if you were to play the permutation ( 1234 ) starting with your first finger on the E string 5 th fret , now it would be played combining the E string and A string as indicated in Example 3 below .
For another example , using the fingering specified in Figure 3 , the permutation ( 3124 ) would be played as indicated in Example 4 .
Another way to raise the level of difficulty is to
Example 1
stretch the permutations across four adjacent strings . While still maintaining a one-finger-perfret approach , the permutations can be played in both ascending and descending applications . Figures 4 and 5 show two different static positions that the permutations can be applied to .
Example 5 demonstrates the permutation ( 1234 ) played starting with the first finger lined up with the 5 th fret E string using the static fingering shown in Figure 4 .

Example 6 demonstrates the first six permutations starting with finger 1 played through in order using the static fingering shown in Figure 4 .
Example 3
Example 7 demonstrates the permutation ( 3412 ) played starting with the first finger lined up with the 5 th fret E string using the static fingering shown in Figure 5 .
Example 4
Example 8 demonstrates the first six permutations that start with finger 2 played through in order using the static fingering shown in Figure 5 .

Example 7
In each of these examples I have shown you a way that you can apply static hand positions in different ways . I hope you are able to see that we have only scratched the surface of how we can practice when using permutation exercises to refine our technique . Try combining these different approaches to come up with your own exercises . I think you will find that they will help to raise your technical confidence and also reveal any underlying weaknesses you might have with regards to finger independence . Until next time , happy practicing !
