Worship should to be fun and exciting . As the Word says , “ Make a joyful noise unto the Lord . Serve the Lord with gladness , come before His presence with singing .” To many , worship is thought of as something that is quiet , still , and reserved . It can be , but it also can be a time of rockin ’ jubilance ! Highest Praise would be a great song to kick off a service of worship … actually , I could see it used at any point in a service .
My friend , Stephen McWhirter serves up some incredible energy in Highest Praise with many possibilities . Most importantly , it ’ s a song of worship with every word directed to the One we worship . If you have musicians who can vamp , there are plenty of opportunities for break-out solos , for drums , keys , guitar , horn … whatever . As a worship leader , I ’ ve always encouraged my musicians to “ sing ” through their instrument so
that they become added voices to the offering of our Highest Praise !
The verses are built on an old-school , fouron-the-floor , bluesy-rock drive that ’ s actually really easy to pull off with the cut capo … only three chords ! For the video , I dropped the key from “ F ” to “ D ” by tuning down a full step and using the cut capo on fret 2 . ( Maybe because I recorded this at 7:30 in the morning !) To play with the recording , keep your guitar in standard tuning with a full capo on fret 1 and cut capo on fret 3 . My goal is to show that you could use this song whether you have a full band or it ’ s just you and your guitar . Leading the song alone , I would use an organ pad to help fill the space .
For the 4-chord , “ Bb ” on the chart , you ’ ll see in the video that I am mostly playing with one finger on the 6-string . Laying my finger on the 5 th string will mute it and bring more clarity to the chord . Live out Psalm 150 and lead your church to lift the Highest Praise !
