CUT CAPO
EVIDENCE BY JOSH BALDWIN | Mitch Bohannon
I heard this song for the first time while returning from our second retreat to Corpus Christi to stay with our kids . You see , our town was right in the path of Hurricane Laura two weeks ago . It ’ s looked like a warzone around here . Thankfully our electricity was restored twelve days after the storm . My coworker ’ s home was totally destroyed . The communities South of us took a much more severe beating . Today , we ’ re waiting on insurance , TV , and internet ! It is so easy to focus on the evidence of devastation that is everywhere … to focus on what we don ’ t have or how difficult it is or was to live when it was 90 degrees inside of our home at night . The rest of our country is seeing devastation in a variety of ways and many are being consumed by hopelessness and fear .
This song is an encouragement to look and see the evidence of God ’ s goodness and the fulfillment of His promises going on in our lives today . It reminds me of what Paul Baloche has been singing about for over 20 years ... “ Open the Eyes of My Heart .” This is a powerful song to sing , like a stake-in-the-ground song to “ Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus and the things of Earth will grow strangely dim ”.
When I ’ m leading a powerful song like this with a tempo of 70 , I will usually call it a “ power ballad ” as I ’ m describing it to the worship band . The song may be slow , but it needs to be played and communicated with power and grit . So , come up with a musical arrangement that communicates that to the people you lead . I could easily hear the chorus and bridge lean to rock with some overdrive and distortion or even lean toward Southern Rock with a slide on a Les Paul guitar . Creating instrumental dynamic changes will help worshipers connect with the message of the song and make it more personal to their situation .
The chart is pretty straight forward with easy chords . It ’ s recorded in the key of “ G ” and the

chord shapes are relative to capos being placed at frets 3 ( full capo ) and 5 ( cut capo ). The “ D / F #” chord could easily be played as a straight “ D ” whether you ’ re playing by yourself or with a band . In a band , the bass guitar will take that “ F #” note . In the video you ’ ll see and hear that I ’ ll throw a stepping chord (“ C ”) on the 4 th beat of the first measure of each chorus phrase as I find it helps build the feeling of the chorus .
