CAPO GUITAR
THRIVE WORSHIP,“ JESUS SONG” | Mitch Bohannon
I’ ll never forget being in Buffalo, NY to film the first webisode about the Kyser Short- Cut capo with Rick Cua for WorshipTogether. Stuart Townend was filming his song,“ In Christ Alone” right before me that weekend. He was explaining how he had set out to write a“ modern hymn” as he was writing that song.
A modern hymn? I have been in the Southern Baptist Church all my life and have a deep love and appreciation for the“ Old Hymns.” Not until that conversation did I consider the idea of“ New” hymns. I had a mental dividing line between hymns and worship songs. The dictionary definition of“ hymn” is simply, a song of praise to God. So, I can only assume there are more people like me who have thought of“ hymns” as songs with multiple verses that may or may not have a chorus … and you only sing verses 1, 2, and 4! That’ s a joke … sort of.
I’ ve been leading a bunch of hymns recently and blending them with current songs, trying to tie them all together. When I heard the new release from Thrive Worship,“ Jesus Song,” I was immediately drawn to it with such powerful lyrics in four verses with a solid, worshipful chorus. Just listening, I knew it would be a great fit for the Short-Cut capo with very simple and easy-to-hear chord changes.
The chart is long with four verses, so I’ ve written out two of them to get you started. Currently, I’ m leading with just my guitar and no band, so this is a song that I will create dynamics by fingerpicking the beginning … probably through the second verse before I begin to build by strumming diamonds( whole notes … or just chord changes) and then gradually building more. The recording arrangement jumps an octave with a double chorus after verse two. Verse three builds straight into verse four with a big chorus to follow.
The pre-chorus and chorus are so simple and

powerful and could easily be tagged onto another song( or“ old hymn”) in the same or a close key. Jesus, Jesus. You alone deserve the highest praise. No one more worthy. No one more worthy. You’ re the Name above all other names. No one more holy. No one more holy.
I’ ve written the chart in the Short-Cut Capo key of“ A.” To play with the recording( key of“ D”), place a full capo on fret 5 and the Short-Cut Capo on fret 7. When I lead the song, I’ ll most probably play in the key of“ C” like on the video, so my capos are at frets 3 and 5.
