LOOP COMMUNITY
CHRIS TOMLIN’ S MOST INTENTIONAL ALBUM YET | Matt McCoy
Chris Tomlin sat down with Loop Community Founder Matt McCoy to talk about his new album, his older music and more!
[ Matt ] Before we talk about your new album, I’ m curious, out of all your older albums, which one feels the most special?
[ Chris ] It’ s pretty easy for me. I instantly think of Arriving. That’ s when I met Ed Cash and when things really shifted for me with a broader reach. Connecting with him as a producer and helping me make these songs, made the songs better. The first time we met, I played him this little chorus“ How Great Is Our God”. And he said,“ It’ s pretty good.” He grabbed his guitar and said he didn’ t think the song was finished. Co-writing wasn’ t a big thing in my world yet. Ed said,“ When you play that I hear You’ re the name above all names,” and the whole bridge of the song came out. So, the very first time we met, the first thing we did, was“ How Great Is Our God.”
[ Matt ] Your new album The King Is Still the
King, tell us about it!
[ Chris ] I feel like if this title came out last year, people would be like‘ Oh that’ s great.’ But it feels like a stronger declaration of faith in the days that we’ re in... Even my concerts, the intensity is way more, the longing for connection is way more for people, especially in their faith. To be in this moment, and drop this music with this title, The King Is Still the King, what an incredible reminder.
What I’ ve always tried to point people to with my music, is to lift our eyes to the greater story that we’ re in. Everything on this Earth has a beginning and an end, except this one thing. That’ s why we gather people to worship, to point them to that. We are a part of a greater Kingdom than what is here on this Earth. Everything we see here is such a small Kingdom compared to the greater Kingdom of Jesus, and He reigns eternally.
This is the most intentional album I’ ve ever made. Everything has intention, even the cover.
The cover doesn’ t even say The King Is Still the King, it’ s just this image over the landscape of the Earth. A montage of the ocean, the mountains, highlands, desert, river, and the crown that sits above it. This crown really tells the whole story to me. The crown of thorns wrapped around the royal crown.
There’ s a song on the album; it’ s the centerpiece and anchor of the album. It’ s called“ Still the King”, and it’ s where the title comes from. There’ s a line that says,“ For the blood is still the blood, and the King is still the King.” That’ s these two crowns.
